Why Accreditation Should Matter to You
Briarwood Detox Center is a Joint Commission-accredited facility, meaning you can trust us to provide:
- The highest-quality drug and alcohol detox treatment available.
- A comfortable facility that provides the utmost safety and care.
- Trusted, experienced professionals who prioritize your health and well-being above all else.
Our accreditation is an outward commitment to ongoing excellence and the highest standards in every area of client treatment, care, and internal processes. Accreditation is not mandatory for detox facilities, but our voluntary pursuit of this helps us measure, assess and improve our performance while continually providing the safest, highest-quality care available.
History of The Joint Commission
This independent, nonprofit organization was founded in 1951 to ensure safe and exceptional healthcare treatment for the public by evaluating organizations such as hospitals, behavioral health centers, laboratories and other similar entities in the industry. The Joint Commission is the oldest and largest accrediting organization for healthcare providers and offers certification and accreditation to thousands of programs and organizations in the United States. The gold seal of approval is a nationally-recognized symbol of excellence.
Joint Commission Standards
To be accredited or certified by The Joint Commission, a facility must meet certain measurable performance standards. The standards that distinguish Joint Commission-approved facilities are developed by knowledgeable experts in the health care field and focus on the facility functions that impact the safety and quality of care for each patient. These standards are continually updated to reflect the advancements in modern health care and accredited facilities receive valuable quality improvement tools to encourage ongoing excellence and improvement.

Payer recognition
Separate from accreditation, and worth explaining because it works differently: in 2026 Briarwood qualified for UnitedHealthcare's National Gold Card Program, effective October 1, 2026.
The Joint Commission surveys how a facility operates. Gold Card looks at a different record. UnitedHealthcare reviews two consecutive years of a provider's prior authorization requests and grants Gold Card status only to providers with at least 92% of its prior authorization requests approved in each of two consecutive years, with a minimum volume each year. In UnitedHealthcare's words, the program recognizes qualified practices that have consistently demonstrated adherence to evidence-based guidelines. A provider that qualifies no longer has each intensive outpatient or partial hospitalization admission reviewed in advance; it files an advance notification instead.
For UnitedHealthcare members that means no wait for an authorization decision before starting our intensive outpatient program. Inpatient detox is still authorized the usual way. Status is re-evaluated each October 1, and this page will be updated if it changes. The UnitedHealthcare coverage page has the details.

Accreditation questions people actually ask
What is The Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval?
An accreditation awarded after an unannounced on-site survey of how an organization actually delivers care, against national standards. It is the most widely recognized mark in American healthcare and it is not permanent.
How long does Joint Commission accreditation last?
Accreditation runs on a three-year cycle for most behavioral health organizations, with unannounced surveys in between. It has to be re-earned rather than renewed, which is what makes it worth asking about.
Why does accreditation matter when choosing a detox center?
Because detox is a medical procedure and most of what distinguishes a safe one from an unsafe one is invisible to a visitor. Accreditation is a third party checking the parts you cannot see: medication protocols, staffing levels, emergency response.
How medically assisted detox worksIs Briarwood licensed by the state of Texas?
Yes, for detox specifically. The license names the level of care, which is why Briarwood does not present itself as a residential rehab: it is licensed to do detox and it says so.
