The short answer

An intensive outpatient program is a way to keep structured treatment going after detox without living at a facility. Sessions run a few times a week, with day or evening options, and you stay at home throughout — which is why most people can keep working while they attend. Briarwood’s IOP runs about eight weeks.

If you are working out what comes after detox, admissions can talk the options through with you now on (866) 710-7710. Free, confidential, and answered around the clock.

Flexible schedule for working professionals

After detox, it’s important to find ongoing support and treatment for addiction, as detox is only intended to help you break your physical dependence on a substance. For many people, an intensive outpatient program (IOP) is a natural step down into the next phase of addiction treatment after detox.

IOP offers individualized treatment for addiction that will empower you to push through barriers that have held you back from achieving lasting sobriety. As you work through an IOP, you’ll gain important skills, tools, and receive support and accountability to maintain this new lifestyle.

What is Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)?

Intensive outpatient rehab for drug and alcohol addiction is a very effective way to transition from inpatient to outpatient care. It also works well for individuals who can’t remove themselves from their home life, work, or school to spend 90 days in a long-term residential treatment center.

While some outpatient addiction treatment programs only last a few weeks, intensive outpatient programs provide eight weeks (or more) of continued support. This allows for more extensive and comprehensive recovery support.

Instead of being housed in a residential center, people enrolled in IOP programs meet several times a week at a convenient location to attend group and individual counseling sessions. These frequent meetings provide the consistency and accountability needed to make real, lasting changes.

What Are the Benefits of IOP?

  • Flexible treatment options. IOP gives you the ability to live life while you pursue recovery. Whether you’re a parent, a student, or a professional, you can work toward your sobriety goals without neglecting your other obligations. You may also choose to complete online IOP, with convenient virtual group sessions you can access from anywhere.
  • Opportunities to apply relapse prevention skills every day. IOP also provides ample opportunity to apply the skills you’re learning in everyday life. With outpatient treatment, you may also have more support at home from family and friends who can help keep you accountable.
  • Develop long-term supportive relationships with others in recovery. An intensive outpatient program also gives you time to establish a community support group full of individuals who share similar struggles and life experiences. This community is a safe place where you can be open and vulnerable while exploring personal issues with others in recovery.
  • Lower cost. Often, inpatient residential drug and alcohol rehab is more expensive than outpatient rehab. IOP treatment is typically a lower cost option because you don’t need to pay for room and board.

How to Use Health Insurance to Pay for IOP

If you have health insurance, your policy may cover a portion of the cost of IOP. You may refer to your insurance policy for details on your available coverage or you can contact an admissions representative at Briarwood Detox Center to verify your coverage for IOP after detox treatment.

Straight answers

Common questions

How many days a week is intensive outpatient treatment, and when do groups meet?

Three times a week, three hours a session, for about eight weeks, and you live at home throughout. There are two tracks: evenings on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 6pm to 9pm, or daytimes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 12pm to 3pm. Groups are capped at 16.

Can I work while attending an intensive outpatient program?

Yes — for most people, working remotely or in person while in IOP is very doable, and it is one of the main reasons people choose IOP over residential treatment. Sessions meet only a few times a week and you live at home.

Why would someone choose IOP instead of residential treatment?

IOP suits people who cannot step away from home, work or school for a long residential stay, and people stepping down from inpatient care who still want structure. It lets you keep your obligations while pursuing recovery.

What is considered an intensive outpatient program?

The usual benchmark is nine hours of treatment a week for an adult. That is the figure SAMHSA uses to distinguish intensive outpatient from standard outpatient care, and it is what most state licensing bodies work to. Below roughly that level a program is ordinary outpatient treatment; at or above it, it is intensive.

What are the signs that someone needs an intensive outpatient program?

The clearest one is that less intensive care has already been tried and things are getting worse rather than better. Beyond that, IOP is generally the fit when someone is not in or at risk of acute withdrawal, when they are willing to attend but their commitment is still shaky, and when home is not an especially supportive place to be recovering. Which level of care is right is a decision to make with a clinician, not from a checklist.

What Kind of Treatment Methods Are Used In Outpatient Rehab?

Intensive outpatient programs blend specialized therapies and treatment modalities to address all aspects of addiction recovery — from daily social interactions and internal thought processes to the science behind addiction. Our licensed addiction treatment professionals use research-based and evidence-based treatment methods to help individuals recover from substance use disorders and learn how to sustain lasting sobriety. Briarwood Detox Center partners with Nova Recovery Center to provide the following addiction treatment services during IOP:

Can I Work Remotely While Attending an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)?

Yes — for most people, working remotely (or in person) while in an intensive outpatient program is very doable, and it's one of the main reasons people choose IOP over residential treatment. IOP sessions typically meet only a few times a week, often with day or evening options, and you live at home throughout — so you can keep working, studying, and handling family responsibilities around your treatment schedule. If your schedule is demanding, an online IOP with virtual group sessions makes fitting treatment around remote work even easier.

How many hours a week does IOP take?

Intensive outpatient programs generally involve several therapy sessions per week — a combination of group and individual counseling — rather than full days. That structure is designed to provide meaningful support while leaving room for work and daily life, which is what makes remote or in-person employment manageable during treatment.

Is online IOP an option if I work from home?

Yes. Briarwood's network offers an online IOP with virtual group sessions you can attend from anywhere, which works well for people balancing remote work, travel, or caregiving. Our admissions team can help you choose between in-person and online IOP based on your schedule and recovery needs.
