Alcohol rehab can sound out of reach if money is tight, but Austin has more low-cost and free options than most people realize. Some are public programs funded for people without insurance. Some are free support groups. And for people with insurance, outpatient treatment often costs far less than they fear. This page sets out the public programs in Travis County, how to get screened for free, what treatment at Briarwood costs, and the free support that helps alongside it. If detox is the first worry, the detox in Austin without insurance page covers that step.
Where can you get low-cost alcohol rehab in Austin?
Start with Integral Care, Travis County’s public provider. It offers low-cost substance use treatment, and its helpline at 512-472-4357 answers 24 hours a day.
Integral Care says it provides low-cost care to anyone in Travis County affected by mental health conditions or substance use disorders. Its services include substance use disorder treatment, counseling and psychiatry. The 24/7 helpline handles crisis support, appointments and questions about services.

How do you get screened for free treatment in Texas?
Call the OSAR program for your region. In Austin that is Bluebonnet Trails Community Services, at 844-309-6385. The only requirement is living in Texas.
OSAR stands for Outreach, Screening, Assessment and Referral. Texas Health and Human Services lists an OSAR for each of its 11 regions and calls it a starting point for anyone unsure where to begin. Staff work out what level of care you need and where you can get it, and the line answers 24 hours a day. Region 7, which includes Travis and Williamson counties, is run from Bluebonnet Trails’ office in Round Rock.
SAMHSA’s National Helpline, 1-800-662-4357, is another free starting point. It says that if you have no insurance, it refers you to the state office responsible for state-funded treatment, and often to programs that charge on a sliding fee scale.

What does alcohol rehab cost at Briarwood?
Briarwood’s intensive outpatient program costs $250 a session, or $6,000 for the full course of 24 sessions, about eight weeks, without insurance. With insurance, most people pay between $0 and $5,000.
The program in Austin runs at the north Austin center at 11711 N Lamar Blvd. Each week has three 3-hour group sessions and one individual session, in person or online. Medicines, doctor visits and drug testing are billed separately.
Outpatient treatment lets you keep working and live at home. Briarwood accepts commercial insurance, TRICARE and VA benefits. It does not accept Medicare or Medicaid. The Austin intensive outpatient page explains the program, and a free benefit check shows what your plan covers in about two minutes.
Are there medicines that make alcohol treatment cheaper?
Not cheaper as such, but they are effective and widely prescribed. Three medicines are approved for alcohol use disorder, and a primary care provider can prescribe them.
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism names naltrexone, which reduces the urge to drink; acamprosate, which eases some of the discomfort of not drinking; and disulfiram, which causes unpleasant symptoms if you drink. They can be used alone or with counseling.
Because a regular doctor can prescribe them, they can be part of treatment without a dedicated treatment program. Ask your doctor whether one fits you.

Is there free support for quitting drinking in Austin?
Yes. Alcoholics Anonymous and other mutual-support groups are free, and Austin has meetings every day of the week.
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism says the free, flexible help from mutual-support groups can help people make and keep changes, especially alongside treatment from health care providers. The AA meetings in Austin page explains how to find one.
Do you need detox before rehab?
If you drink heavily every day, yes. Stopping suddenly can be dangerous, so detox under medical care usually comes first.
The National Library of Medicine warns that alcohol withdrawal can quickly become life threatening, and advises going to the emergency room or calling 911 for seizures, fever, severe confusion or hallucinations. Briarwood’s inpatient detox in Austin and Houston has a nurse on site 24 hours a day and a physician on call. Most stays last five to seven days.
